Passport of Nazir Ahmed Qureshi, Bradford, 1975
In 1975, Nazir was establishing himself as a figure of the Tabligh-Jamaat (a Muslim group that encouraged connection to faith) in Bradford and nearby Dewsbury and Batley. As part of this, he travelled to different countries, but also welcomed Muslims from around the world to Bradford.
He began a job teaching calligraphy at a Madrassa (Islamic school) in Dewsbury called Dar Ul Ulum. He used his calligraphy to to write signs for overseas visitors coming to the Madrassa – one of the visiting scholars said it was the best penmanship he had ever seen. Nazir would become head calligraphy and urdu teacher at the school.
