Sakta Dance Group, The Bradford Central Library Theatre, 1969
This event was part of the 20th Anniversary of the Sakta dance group, Sakta translates to Brooch.
Laima and Eduards Grinbergs were migrants from Latvia to Bradford who were members of the Sakta dance group when it was first set up in 1949.
This celebration was a sold out event and a group of Dutch musicians were invited to play. The costume worn by Laima and Eduard’s daughter Dzintra was sewn by her aunt, the skill of embroidery was learnt by her mother and aunt while in refugee camps before their arrival in the UK. The costumes are determined by those who create the groups and dependant on region. These particular red skirts are from Nica and the black skirts are from Barta.
