Dzintra Grinbergs and fellow pupils, St Philips C of E Primary School, 1958
Upon starting school Dzintra Grinbergs (centre, polka dot dress) couldn’t speak English, she was taught her language skills by Mrs Aldersome at St Philips Primary School. Story times were always read aloud in English and Dzintra remembers the day she understood the story for the first time.
Communication with her family at home was always in Latvian, though her Father, Eduards, picked up English at work and her Mother, Laima, learnt English from magazines and listening to Woman’s Hour.
