Ferdinand and Lydia Valter, Manningham, Bradford, 1951

Ferdi Valter migrated to the UK in 1947 as part of a government work scheme, and was initially based at a displaced persons camp in Northumberland. He met Lydia, originally from Newcastle, at a local dance. They fell in love and got married in 1950. Lydia worked for the Women’s Land Army. They came to Bradford for work and were amongst the founders of the modern day Eesti Kodu (Estonian Club) in Manningham.

Sadly, they both lost their lives in a car crash, leaving behind a son, Paul, who was raised by his godparents Ulo and Eva Tendal. Anne Tendal recalls how Paul became like a brother, and was an important member of the family.
