Linda Hall, South View Road, East Bierley, c.1962

Linda Hall washes her father Eric’s Commer Cob. Eric was a sales rep for Service brand washing machines and could fit two machines in the back of the van. At the weekends, the seats folded up to make the ideal family car.

This was first house the Hall’s bought in 1959, after living in a council house on Bierley estate. The purchase made no sense to Eric’s mother, who couldn’t understand why anyone would trade a new council house close to family for an old terraced house in what felt like a distant land.
