Paul Kellett, Paula Kellett, Dzintra Grinbergs and Lija Kellett, West Bowling, 1989
Dzintra Grinbergs married Englishman, Paul Kellett. This family photo was taken at Dzintra’s parents home in West Bowling. Dzintra’s mother Laima had arrived in Bradford from Latvia, via Germany, in 1948.
The candles on the Christmas tree represent light returning – a Latvian tradition to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Every Christmas, the family lights candles, turn out the lights, and sing traditional folk and Christmas songs. They each take turn to recite a poem before receiving any gifts. They hang piparkukas (traditional christmas biscuits) from the tree as decorations.
