The Grinbergs family, Whetley Grove, c.1960

Siblings Dzintra, Karlis, Laimons, Janis and Andris Grinbergs celebrating Jani (Midsummer festival). Jani is celebrated on the 24th June every year; during the festival songs are sung and bonfires are lit. The crowns worn by Dzintra and her siblings are traditionally made with oak leaves, oak trees are significant in Latvian tradition. Dzintra’s crown had flowers entwined within it as the oak leaf crowns are traditionally for males.

This photograph would have been taken to send to the children’s grandmother in Latvia.
