Uno Tendal and Johannes Tendal, Estonia, c.1968

Johannes Tendal, travelled from Estonia to Bradford, via Moscow, when he was 16. He brought with him a suitcase of black bread – a dark-coloured rye bread popular in Estonia. The journey took around 3 weeks in total.

When he arrived he went to C&A and bought a sheepskin coat, it stayed in the closet and had pride of place for many years. When he went back to Estonia, all of Anne’s cousins said they wanted American jeans and felt-tip pens because they couldn’t get them in Estonia.
